Dr. James failed to make an obvious diagnosis of macular degeneration in my right eye, despite repeated visits. His examination was superficial. I repeatedly told him--not knowing the significance at the time--that I was seeing wavy lines. He failed to do anything to identify the problem. I subsequently, out of desperation, went to another ophthalmologist in Annapolis. She brought to bear the most up-to-date and sophisticated methods of diagnosis; within a couple of weeks I was undergoing treatment that is, apparently, going to halt and possibly completely reverse the degeneration. James is board certified, but not in any current sense; he is able to claim board certification because he passed an exam in 1977. He is grandfathered in--but specialists who were certified since about 1990 have to pass periodic examinations, quite rigorous, to demonstrate that they are up-to-date and competent. I would have sued him, no question, if it had not been for the very competent, outstanding, service from my second specialist in Annapolis.
